Dear Kalamazoo Area Runners (KAR) Members,

As we approach the holiday season, the health and safety of our members and their loved ones are our top priority. In order to do our part to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, we have had to made some difficult decisions about upcoming Kalamazoo Area Runners (KAR) events, programs and group runs.

While yesterday’s MDHHS order permits outdoor gatherings up to 25, the current COVID-19 spike and community spread in our region combined with the upcoming holidays presents additional risk to our members in continuing to host in-person club activities.
The Kalamazoo Area Runners (KAR) Board of Directors held an Emergency Board Meeting this evening and has made the following decisions regarding upcoming group runs, events and programs effective Wednesday, November 18th:

  • The Turkey Trot Time Prediction 5k Run will be cancelled as an in-person event. The committee will evaluate several options including offering a virtual event, issuing refunds and/or allowing for a donation option.
  • The Run Around Gull Lake scheduled for December 5, 2020 will be cancelled.
  • All KAR Group Runs will be placed on hiatus through the end of the year and reevaluated after the first of the year. This includes the Tuesday Sunrise Run in Kalamazoo, the Wednesday Evening Run in Portage, the Thursday Evening Run from Maple YMCA, the Thursday Evening Run in Richland and the Sunday Run from Battle Creek YMCA.
  • The 2021 Beyond Half and Full Marathon Training Program will be evaluated by the Beyond Planning Committee and a recommendation twill be made upon further discussion, and reevaluated based on changing circumstances.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we strive to promote the health and safety of our runners and the overall well-being of our community. We wish you and your loved ones peace, joy and good health as we enter the holiday season.

Sincerely,
The Kalamazoo Area Runners (KAR) Board
